We decided we would do day trips to local attractions mixed in with visits to family and chill days, today we went to Portchester Castle.....awesome!
It was first built in 270 BC as a Roman Fort, then used during the Saxon, Norman & Medieval periods right up until the Napoleonic War where it was used as a prison each era adding buildings. We spent a few hours looking round the inside and then had lunch after which we walked around the outside.
Part of the Roman outer wall.
View of the Roman wall and Ashton's Tower
The inner fort/palace built between the 1100's - 1600's
The church's lynchgate & door
This Yew must be hundreds of years old!
I love this view from the keep
A lovely day out and the area inside the fort is a great place to have a picnic. You only have to pay to get into the inner palace area so can have a great free day there if you want.
